A Guide to Investor ITAS PT PMA Director and Commissioner

Operating a PT PMA While Working in Another Company in Bali – Can You Do That?

You’ve successfully established your PT PMA (Foreign-Owned Company) in Bali. Business is running well, and you’re officially listed as the Director (or Commissioner), holding an Investor ITAS. Life in paradise is looking good.

Then one day, another PT PMA approaches you with an enticing offer — a paid role that could be financially rewarding and professionally exciting. So you start to think:

Can you legally take on that second role with your Investor ITAS?

We understand that navigating the rules surrounding stay permits can be confusing. That is why we will help you to take a closer look at what an Investor ITAS allows you to do and where the limitations lie.

What You Can Do With an Investor ITAS

An Investor ITAS (Limited Stay Permit) is a type of visa specifically designed for foreign nationals who invest in and actively manage their own company, a PT PMA, in Indonesia. This visa is only available for those listed as Director or Commissioner in a PT PMA and is issued under the sponsorship of your own company.
If you hold an Investor ITAS, you’re legally allowed to:
ℹ️ Investor ITAS gives you the flexibility to live and work in Indonesia — but only within your own company.

What You Cannot Do with an Investor ITAS

Since the Investor ITAS is tied specifically to your PT PMA, it does not allow you to work for or take any paid position in another company, even if that company is also a PT PMA in Bali. If you’re offered a consulting project, a freelance gig, or even a part-time role in another business, you cannot legally accept it.

To work for another PT PMA or Indonesian company in Bali, you would need to:

  1. Cancel your Investor ITAS
  2. Restructure your PT PMA Company .
  3. Apply for a Working ITAS sponsored by the PT PMA that hires you.
  4. The new company must register your position with the Ministry of Manpower.

Without these steps, taking on external work would be considered a violation of immigration regulations and could result in:

Can You Hold Two ITAS at the Same Time?

You might wonder if it’s possible to hold two ITAS—one as an investor and another as a worker. Unfortunately, NO. Indonesian immigration law does not allow dual sponsorships. You can only be sponsored by one company at a time under a valid stay permit.
Although your Investor ITAS limits you to working only in your own PT PMA, it still offers significant benefits and flexibility. You have the freedom to:
  • Build and grow your own business in Bali.
  • Earn income from your company.
  • Live long-term in Indonesia with fewer restrictions.
  • Expand operations as your business evolves.
If you’re considering additional business opportunities in Bali, make sure you understand your visa limitations first. A small misstep could lead to significant consequences. Before taking on any new opportunity, consulting with an expert like Usaha Expat is highly recommended to ensure everything is compliant with Indonesian law.
